Treasures of the Flock
All of our sheep AND GOAT skins are salvaged from farmers’ waste in the wild mountains of Crete, Greece, as a byproduct of the local meat industry
Each skin is hand processed with reverence and ingredients from the land:
olive oil from our family farm, free range egg yolk, natural soap, ethically sourced tannins etc.
OUR mission IS TO WORK AS CLOSE TO TRADITION AS POSSIBLE, while giving new life to these precious skins once destined for the landfill
It’s with great respect for the animals
that we revive & steward this ancestral art form

our process
01- we hand pick the sheep and goat skins from large bins where they are dumped into the landfill by the hundreds. it took us much care and effort to cultivate these relationships with local farmers and those working in the meat industry, so its a great privilege to collect a small portion of their by-waste to up-cycle into these incredible animal products. the farmers and workers are very intrigued by our work and proud to see the tradition carried forward, since it’s not practiced here anymore.

02- once home, we store the sheep and goat skins in a large freezer that we invested in, unless we will work on them right away. if so, they get fleshed, which is the process of removing the muscle tissues and membrane from the skin side of the pelt with a double handled knife. this is the ‘dirtiest’ step. the cats love eating the scraps.
𓃵
03- the fleshed and fresh skins are washed with castile or eco dish soap, given their first brushing and cleaning before being submerged into the pickle, which is made with water, salt and citric powder.
𓃵
04- after pickling a few days to clean between membrane layers, and secure the hair in its follicles, they are moved to a strong tannin tea, made of water and mimosa bark powder, which is sourced ethically with great care.
𓃵
05- after about a week in the tannin tea, the sheepies are removed from the tannin, washed one last time and stretched in wooden frames for conditioning, softening, scraping and brushing. the conditioner is made of free range egg yolk and olive oil from my grandparent’s land. we soften the sheepies with a pumice stone, or for larger or tougher skins, an electric sander for a super smooth feel. a final spray with vinegar levels the pH of the wool, restoring its curls and character, and making it super soft.

06- once completely finished, we marvel at this incredible transformation and offer them to you with so much love and admiration for the animals, and this ancient tradition that we’re honored to carry forward.
